It’s Scary Out There!

I had a conversation with a fellow entrepreneur the other day. They were explaining to me how they are learning to code. This was new to them and they’ve been grinding out the hours to do so. Once they learned this new thing they would then be able to apply it to the startup they are working on. Once they get this working then they’ll have their platform and can start selling and start working on building the business.

While I was listening it struck me.

Being An Entrepreneur Is Scary!

There are so many things that could go wrong.

What if my idea sucks?
What if it doesn’t work?
What if it works too well and I can’t keep up?
What if no one likes it?
What if…
What if…

I’m not going to pretend that I have all the answers. I go through this same challenges too. But, I think this person was really using learning to code as a distraction when they would be better off building a network to sell to or even just selling pre-orders.

Don’t Use Perfection As An Excuse

Some of it is an effort to save many in a bootstrapped business. I get that, I’m trying to spend money wisely as I build my business too, but I think we often get caught up in trying to make everything perfect.

In this case, there are plenty of people that know how to code and or might even be able to find a good template. It might take some money up front, but that way you’ll get to the making money part a lot faster. And if you get creative you can reduce that cost drastically.

Using your strengths will move things faster than trying to learn something new that you need to apply right now.

You Just Have To Go For It!

Launching doesn’t have to be perfect. If you wait for that… you’ll never get started! And if your idea sucks at least you’ll waste less time on it, right?

Think About Your Legacy

I just passed 9 months since I left my full-time job to go back out on my own with my agency and I’ve been thinking about how things are going. This is not the first time I’ve gone down the entrepreneurial road, so the hope is that I’ve learned from the past and won’t make the same mistakes I made previously.

Recently I have been listening to a lot of Gary Vanerchuk’s content. There’s a lot things that he talks about that really hits home.

It Is Your Legacy

Maybe the first and most important thing is the idea that we are all creating our own legacy. The thing that I like most about what I am doing, is I feel I have control of how that plays out. But that is also a double-edged sword at times. I have control, but I’m also accountable. Gary’s quote really drives it home.

“Please think about your legacy, because you’re writing it every day.”

If you can wake up every day and say that what I’m doing today is positively contributing to your legacy, then guess what, you’re winning already! This goes for everyone, not just entrepreneurs.

It has become sexy to be an entrepreneur. People that do it because it is “sexy” don’t really know what it really means. Yes, doing “your own thing” can be exhilarating. It can be a rush when you win that big client, or you successfully complete a project that makes a real impact.

It can really suck too. It’s sometimes lonely, sometimes things don’t work and you fail. Or you lose that client you were so happy to win. Plus, other people might call you crazy or tell you, “You’ll never make it. Your idea sucks.”

Entrepreneurship is a journey.

It’s a journey that not for everyone can handle, but if you have the means I encourage you to try it.

When I meet people and they say they want to start a business. I encourage them to follow their dreams, but I try to help them understand what the journey may be like. If starting a business is what makes you happy and fits with the legacy you want to create. Go for it! If you’re doing it because it’s cool. You should probably go get a job.

Is Cheaper Really Better?

There will always be someone that says they can do it cheaper. But the real question is, “Is cheaper really better?” I would say more times than not, it is not. From a business sales perspective if you compete on price and strive to be the cheapest, you will end up with cheap clients. From a buying perspective, if all you care about is that you get something for the lowest price, you will end up with something that is worth low quality.
