Google TV – Combining TV with the Internet

Google TVI’ve heard mixed reviews about Google TV. I read an article on Forbes today that gave a pretty good explanation of what to expect. Basically, it’s an ongoing development. Google releases products that are still in development because they want third parties to develop apps, new advertising and business models as well as other ideas. This is what makes the product. Looking at the Android mobile OS, it was pretty terrible at the start, but since developers have been allowed to create apps based on the OS it has become a true competitor to the iPhone. In fact it is on track to have more users than Apples OS.

I love the idea of Google TV. Microsoft and Apple have been trying to bring the internet into the living room for years without much success. Most of the other TVs that include internet are not full blown internet, but a series of apps limiting access. Even with it’s “under development” status, I think this has the best shot to achieve a seamless combination of the two. I’m seriously considering Google TV as my next TV, but I just hope they make it easy to upgrade as the product develops.

Comcast sorry to be blunt, but once again you’ve proved how much you suck

Yesterday afternoon, I was trying to send email but was greeted with a failure notice. I had just done a bunch of updates to my site so I thought maybe I had blocked myself out of my server because I was hitting it a lot. That was not the case. I was able to do everything but send email.

To make a long story short I tested everything on my end and determined that it had to be Comcast. I tried their mail servers because with my experience working with 1&1 Internet I know that Comcast often likes to block ports and only allow you to send through their mail servers. That still didn’t work. So I had to waste my time calling Comcast to get it to work, even though I was already doing exactly what the tech told me to do.

The tech told me that there was suspicious active from my IP address: I.e. massive amounts of email going out from my network. But of course he could not tell me when this happened or to what extent. So, I’ve been tagged as a spammer even though they can’t tell me why. I know that I don’t have a virus because I’ve checked and rechecked all my machines. Oh and the tech informed me that it was for my own protection. Thanks for the clarification Comcast!

Man in China dies after three-day Internet session

Check this out. Could it just be propaganda? Or can people really die from internet use? Maybe the Chinese government needs to implement the “Twelve-Step Program“?

A Chinese man dropped dead after playing Internet games for three consecutive days, state media said on Monday as China seeks to wean Internet addicts offline.

The man from the southern boomtown of Guangzhou, aged about 30, died on Saturday after being rushed to the hospital from the Internet cafe, local authorities were quoted by the Beijing News as saying.

“Police have ruled out the possibility of suicide,” the newspaper said, adding that exhaustion was the most likely cause of death. It did not say what game he was playing.

China, worried about the spread of pornography and politically incorrect content, has banned the opening of new cybercafes this year and issued orders limiting the time Internet users can spend playing online.

In April, President Hu Jintao launched a campaign to rid the Internet of “unhealthy” content and make it a platform for Communist Party doctrine. -From Reuters
